The Aquaculture unit is responsible for cultivating marine species and collaborating closely with local communities in all aquaculture-related programs to help improve livelihoods and food security. This would help achieve one of the Fisheries Division's Objectives which is to sustainably manage the coastal fisheries resources by diversifying the fishing pressure on coastal resources to Aquaculture activities.
The unit’s objectives are to:
Promote sustainable aquaculture development suitable for the Kiribati context
Conduct research activities on potential aquaculture species
Introduction of potential aquaculture species suitable for aquaculture development
Implement restocking and enhancement initiatives for significant commercial species of concern
Provide trainings to local communities in collaboration with NGOs and non-NGOs
Cultivation, revival of potential milkfish ponds and provision of milkfish fries to local communities.
Cultivation and provision of giant clams to marine protected areas for restocking purposes.
Cultivation, revitalization of seaweed to the Gilbert group, and promotion of seaweed value-added products
Cultivation and introduction of sandfish farming to local communities as an additional source of income
Cultivation, inoculation and scale-up of live micro-algae species as feed.
